William Steiger

Road Less Traveled

"Road Less Traveled" is an exhibition where the artist explores inherently nostalgic and anachronistic images that speak to the idealism of modernization. Steiger's works are exercises in minimalist visual language that depict typical American scenarios, with a vision that represents a time when technology offered utopian possibilities and inspired the collective fantasy of progress. For the artist, "Much of architecture has a purpose, it is not built to please the eye, but to fulfill a function, such as the storage of water or grain. Seeking beauty in structure may not be the most obvious choice; however, my visual language grew out of this decision to reimagine, to project a soul into man-made objects."

Crítica "Road Less Traveled"

The title of William Steiger's exhibition, "Road Less Traveled," is taken from a poem by Robert Frost. Two roads forked in a forest, and I took the one less traveled by, and that made all the difference." These lines remind us that choice is powerful, especially when taking an unexpected path and embarking on a new one. The themes of Steiger's work fit this sentiment.

He explores inherently nostalgic images that speak to the idealism of modernization. His recent works depict telephone poles, grain elevators, wooden bridges, architecture and amusements from the turn of the last century. They represent a time when technology offered utopian possibilities and inspired the collective fantasy of progress. Steiger's archetypal subject matter is familiar, but there are very few references to specific places, times of day or even eras. The images could be from today or 100 years ago. The objects are not set in the past or the present, but all are strangely familiar.
