Xavier Grau

In memory of Xavier Grau

This artist from Barcelona (1951 - 2020) is considered one of the most important Catalan painters of the last century within the abstract movement. His paintings linked to the American Abstract Expressionist movement have a strong expressive power and emotional honesty. With this exhibition we intend to make a tribute to his painting career, with works belonging to different creative stages that show the evolution in his style and his own language within the painting.

En memoria de Xavier Grau - Catálogo online

Xavier Grau (Barcelona, 1951 - 2020) belongs to a generation that lived through times of great social changes and deep reforms at both political and economic levels. All of this led to an art that sought to capture reality while being critical of it.

In order to really understand his work, a certain social context is needed.

In the 1970s, when this young artist began his pictorial journey, Spain was still suffering the last throes of a dictatorial regime and was immersed in a tide of great social changes and a great political and ideological plurality.
